Waterproof GPS Tracker Guide: Where to Fit One and 6 Reliable Uses

A waterproof GPS tracker keeps working where ordinary trackers struggle: in the rain, in road spray, in mud on a building site and in the damp corners of a caravan or a motorbike. Because it is sealed, it can be hidden in places a thief is unlikely to look, including outside the cabin. This guide explains how a waterproof GPS tracker works, where to fit one, and the vehicles and situations it suits best.

Why waterproofing matters

Most vehicle trackers are designed to sit inside the dashboard, out of the weather. That works for cars, but it limits where a tracker can go on motorbikes, trailers, plant and leisure vehicles, and it gives thieves an obvious place to look. A waterproof GPS tracker can be fitted in many more places: behind body panels, inside chassis members or in the frame of a bike. More hiding places means a tracker that is harder to find.

Water and dirt are also the biggest enemies of electronics. Corrosion, condensation and road salt can stop an ordinary tracker working over time. A sealed waterproof GPS tracker keeps them out, so it carries on reporting through a British winter.

How our waterproof GPS tracker works

Our TM880 is a compact, sealed 4G tracker with just two wires. Connect them straight to the vehicle’s battery, place the tracker out of sight and it starts reporting its position over the mobile network. You see the vehicle live on the map in the TrackManager app or on your computer, with journey history, zone alerts and driver behaviour reports.

Because it needs only a battery connection, there is no need to find an ignition feed or to dismantle the dashboard. That makes the TM880 one of the easiest trackers to fit yourself, and it is why it suits so many different vehicles.

6 reliable uses for a waterproof GPS tracker

  1. Motorbikes, where space is tight and the tracker may sit near the frame or under the seat. See the Waterproof Motorbike Tracker TM880.
  2. Caravans, wired to the leisure battery and hidden in a locker or chassis. See the Waterproof Caravan Tracker TM880.
  3. Plant and machinery, exposed to mud, dust and pressure washing. See the Waterproof Plant Tracker TM880.
  4. Trucks and trailers, where road spray and salt are constant. See the Waterproof Truck Tracker TM880.
  5. Vans, cars and campervans, as a main tracker or a hidden second one. See the Waterproof Van Tracker TM880, Waterproof Car Tracker TM880 and Waterproof Campervan Tracker TM880.
  6. Motorhomes and other vehicles, anywhere a sealed, two-wire tracker makes life easier. See the Waterproof Motorhome Tracker TM880 and the Waterproof Vehicle Tracker TM880.

Where to fit a waterproof GPS tracker

The best place is somewhere hidden, protected from direct impact and not surrounded by thick metal, which can weaken the signal. Good options include behind plastic body panels, inside the frame or chassis members, under seats and within lockers. Avoid places that get very hot, such as right next to the exhaust, and keep the wires tidy and secured so they cannot chafe.

If you would rather not fit it yourself, choose our UK nationwide mobile installation when you order and an engineer will fit the waterproof GPS tracker at your home or workplace.

What you see in the app

The TrackManager app shows where your vehicle is now and where it has been, with every journey saved. Set a zone around home, the yard or a campsite and get an alert when the vehicle leaves. Set a speed limit for a new driver. Check driver behaviour reports for a business vehicle. All of your vehicles appear on one map, whatever trackers they use, and you can give family members or colleagues their own login.

Waterproof GPS tracker vs insurance approved tracker

The TM880 is a live GPS tracker: alerts come to you, and you decide what to do. It is ideal when tracking is your own choice. If your insurer requires a tracker, they will usually ask for one approved by Thatcham Research, professionally fitted and monitored 24/7, such as our S7, S5 or S5 Plus. Many owners fit both: an approved tracker for insurance and a hidden waterproof GPS tracker as a back-up that a thief is unlikely to find.

Battery and power

The waterproof GPS tracker draws a small amount of power from the vehicle’s battery and reports less often when the vehicle is parked. For vehicles used regularly, that is not noticeable. For vehicles laid up for months, such as caravans and motorbikes over winter, keep the battery charged with a conditioner or solar panel. If you need a tracker with no wiring at all, our battery-powered Ultra asset trackers last one to five years on their own cells.

Cost and delivery

The TM880 waterproof GPS tracker costs £44.99, with free next-day delivery (Monday to Friday). Tracking plans start at £4.99 a month on TrackManager Lite or £8.50 a month on full TrackManager, with no contract, and you can save by paying for one, two or three years up front. Professional fitting is available nationwide if you need it.

A hidden second tracker

Professional thieves sometimes search a vehicle for a tracker before moving it, and they know the usual places to look. A waterproof GPS tracker gives you options they do not expect: inside a chassis member, behind an exterior panel or deep in a bike’s frame. That is why many owners fit one as a second, hidden tracker alongside an insurance approved or wired tracker. If a thief finds and removes the first, the waterproof GPS tracker is still reporting, and both appear together in the same app.

Looking after your tracker

A waterproof GPS tracker needs very little care. Check now and then that it is still secure and that the wires are tidy, especially on vehicles that work in rough conditions. If you pressure-wash plant or bikes, avoid aiming the jet directly at the tracker for long periods. Glance at the app occasionally to make sure the vehicle is reporting. If anything looks wrong, call us and we will help.

Security tips to go with your tracker

  • Use a physical lock as well: a disc lock on a bike, a wheel clamp on a caravan or trailer, a steering lock on a car or van.
  • Keep the tracker’s location to yourself.
  • Set a zone and a movement alert, so you know as soon as the vehicle moves.
  • Keep photographs, registration and serial numbers on your phone, ready for the police if you need them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TM880 fully waterproof?

It is sealed against water, dust and road spray, so it can be fitted in exposed places on bikes, trailers, plant and caravans. Avoid aiming a pressure washer directly at it for long periods.

Can I fit a waterproof GPS tracker myself?

Yes. It has just two wires to the battery, so most people fit it in minutes. Professional installation is available if you prefer.

Does a waterproof GPS tracker need a subscription?

Yes, to pay for the mobile data. Plans start from £4.99 a month with no contract.

Will my insurer accept a waterproof GPS tracker?

Insurers that require a tracker usually ask for a Thatcham approved, monitored one. The TM880 is a live GPS tracker, ideal as your own choice or as a hidden back-up.

Where should I fit it on a motorbike?

Somewhere hidden and protected, such as under the seat or within the frame, away from the exhaust. If you are unsure, ask our team.

Will it drain my battery?

It uses very little power. For vehicles laid up for months, keep the battery charged with a conditioner.

How quickly is it delivered?

Delivery is free and next day, Monday to Friday.
