A GPS asset tracker protects the things a normal vehicle tracker cannot easily reach: trailers, plant, caravans, containers and equipment that have no engine running or no power supply of their own. Because it runs on its own long-life battery, a GPS asset tracker needs no wiring, can be hidden almost anywhere and keeps working even if a thief cuts every cable. This guide explains how a GPS asset tracker works, what it is best for and how to choose the right one.

What is a GPS asset tracker?
A GPS asset tracker is a self-contained tracking device: a GPS receiver, a mobile connection and a battery, sealed in one small, tough case. It does not need to be connected to anything. Switch it on, hide it, and it reports its position to your account over the 4G mobile network.
To make the battery last, a GPS asset tracker does not transmit all the time. It wakes at set times, reports where it is and then switches its signal off again. That is the secret behind both its long battery life and its biggest advantage: because it is silent most of the time, it is very hard to find with a signal detector.
6 reliable ways to use a GPS asset tracker
- Trailers. Plant, car and horse trailers are easy to hitch and tow away. A hidden GPS asset tracker tells you where one has gone.
- Plant and machinery. Diggers, dumpers and generators on site often have no tracker of their own. A battery tracker needs no wiring into the machine.
- Caravans. A wireless tracker keeps working even if a thief disconnects the caravan’s leisure battery.
- Containers and equipment. Site cabins, containers and high-value equipment can be tracked wherever they are moved.
- A hidden second tracker. Fit one alongside a wired tracker. If a thief finds and removes the first, the second is still reporting.
- Vehicles in storage. For vehicles laid up for months, a battery tracker does not draw on the vehicle’s own battery.
The GPS asset trackers we offer
Waterproof ULTRA asset trackers
Our waterproof ULTRA asset trackers are compact, weatherproof and work straight out of the box, with tracking from £4.99 a month and no contract:
Insurance approved S7 Ultra asset trackers
If your insurer requires an approved tracker, the S7 Ultra is a Thatcham approved GPS asset tracker monitored 24/7 by our UK team, with free fitting:
Nitro Immobiliser Ultra Asset Tracker
The Nitro Immobiliser Ultra Asset Tracker pairs a covert ULTRA asset tracker with a PIN-start immobiliser, so a vehicle cannot be started without your code and can still be found if it is lifted away.

Battery life explained
The battery in our ULTRA trackers lasts one to five years, depending on how often the tracker reports. Based on two reports a day, it lasts towards the upper end of that range. Reporting more often uses more power; reporting less often stretches the battery further. If you need to follow an asset closely, for example after a theft, a live tracking mode reports much more often for a short time.
The app shows you the battery level, so you always know when a replacement is coming up.
Where to hide a GPS asset tracker
At 84mm x 63mm x 24mm and around 90g, an ULTRA tracker fits into small spaces. Good places include inside a trailer’s chassis members, behind panels, inside equipment housings or within a caravan’s lockers. With the optional magnetic base, it can be fixed to any steel surface in seconds, and moved between assets whenever you need. Avoid placing it under thick metal plates or deep inside steel boxes, which can block the signal.
Wired vs battery tracker: which do you need?
- A wired tracker reports frequently, shows live journeys and never needs its own battery changed, but it needs a power supply and fitting.
- A battery GPS asset tracker reports less often, but needs no wiring, can be hidden anywhere and keeps working when cables are cut.
For vehicles you drive every day, a wired tracker usually suits best. For trailers, plant, caravans and equipment, or as a hidden back-up, a GPS asset tracker is ideal.
Registering your assets
A tracker helps you find a stolen asset, and registration helps the police prove who it belongs to. Construction and agricultural machinery can be registered under the CESAR scheme, the official equipment security and registration scheme supported by the construction industry, and caravans can be registered on CRiS. Together with a GPS asset tracker, registration makes stolen assets much harder to sell and much easier to return.
What happens if an asset is stolen?
With a waterproof ULTRA tracker, you see the asset’s reported position in the app and can set a zone so you are alerted if it leaves its usual place. Report the theft to the police straight away and share the position with them. With an S7 Ultra, our UK monitoring team is on hand 24/7: call us on 01622 234510, option 1, and we will track the asset and work with the police to recover it.
Cost and delivery
Our waterproof ULTRA asset trackers cost £199.99, with tracking plans from £4.99 a month on TrackManager Lite and free next-day delivery (Monday to Friday). An optional magnetic base costs £30. The approved S7 Ultra includes free fitting in mainland UK, with monitoring from £10.99 a month, or from £8.72 a month when you pay for several years.
Protecting a trailer, step by step
- Choose a hiding place inside the chassis or bodywork, out of sight and away from thick steel that could block the signal.
- Fix the GPS asset tracker securely, with the magnetic base or with fixings.
- Check it appears in the app and name it clearly.
- Draw a zone around your yard or driveway, so you are alerted if the trailer leaves.
- Add a wheel clamp and a hitch lock, so the trailer is harder to take in the first place.
- Register serial numbers and keep photographs, ready for the police if you ever need them.
Plant on site
Construction sites are often quiet at night and over weekends, which is when plant is most at risk. A GPS asset tracker in each machine shows you where everything is, across every site, and alerts you if a machine leaves a site zone. Combined with immobilisers, site security and CESAR registration, it makes your machinery a much less attractive target. The asset history also helps site managers see which machines are where, which saves time when planning jobs.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Hiding it inside a sealed steel box. Metal can block the signal. Choose a spot with a little open space around it.
- Forgetting to set a zone. Without a zone, you will not be alerted when the asset moves.
- Telling everyone where it is. The fewer people who know where a tracker is hidden, the better.
- Ignoring the battery level. Glance at the app now and then, so you know well in advance when a replacement is due.
Managing several assets
If you have a yard full of trailers or a fleet of plant, every GPS asset tracker appears on the same map in one account. Name each one clearly, set zones around your yard and your sites, and check battery levels at a glance. Share access with site managers and staff, with no limit to the number of logins. When an asset moves between jobs, the history shows where it has been, which helps with planning and billing as well as security.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a GPS asset tracker battery last?
One to five years, depending on how often it reports. Based on two reports a day, the battery lasts towards the upper end of that range.
Does a GPS asset tracker need wiring?
No. It runs on its own battery and works straight out of the box. You can fit it yourself or choose our installation service.
Is a GPS asset tracker waterproof?
Our ULTRA trackers are waterproof, so they can be fitted outside on trailers, plant and caravans.
Can a thief detect a GPS asset tracker?
Because it switches its signal off between reports, a GPS asset tracker is very hard to find with a signal detector, especially when it is well hidden.
Can I use a GPS asset tracker as a second tracker?
Yes. Many customers fit one alongside a wired or insurance approved tracker as a hidden back-up.
Is there an insurance approved GPS asset tracker?
Yes. The S7 Ultra is Thatcham approved and monitored 24/7, with free fitting in mainland UK.
Can I see the battery level?
Yes. The app shows each tracker’s battery level, so you know when a replacement is due.
