Car Immobiliser Guide: What It Is, How It Works and 6 Proven Reasons to Fit One

A car immobiliser is a device that stops a car’s engine from starting unless the right key, code or signal is present. Every new car sold in the UK for many years has had a factory immobiliser built in, yet cars are still stolen every day. This guide explains what a car immobiliser does, why factory systems are no longer enough on their own, how an aftermarket CANBUS immobiliser works, and why many drivers now pair a car immobiliser with a tracker.

What is a car immobiliser?

In its simplest form, a car immobiliser interrupts something the engine needs to start: the fuel supply, the ignition or, in modern cars, the electronic messages that tell the engine it is allowed to run. Unless the immobiliser is satisfied, the engine stays off, however the thief got into the car.

Factory immobilisers use a chip in the key. When the key is near the car, the car reads the chip; if it recognises it, the engine is allowed to start. That system made old-fashioned hot-wiring almost impossible and cut car crime dramatically. Thieves, however, have adapted.

Why factory immobilisers are no longer enough

Modern theft rarely involves breaking the immobiliser. Instead, criminals fool it into thinking the real key is present. There are three common methods:

  • Relay attacks. One device picks up the signal from a keyless key inside your home, and a second device near the car passes it on. The car unlocks and starts as if the key were there.
  • Key programming. Thieves connect to the car’s diagnostic port and programme a blank key, which the factory immobiliser then accepts.
  • CAN injection. Criminals access the car’s wiring, often behind a headlight, and send messages that unlock the car and allow it to start.

In each case, the factory car immobiliser is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It simply cannot tell the difference between the owner’s key and a convincing fake.

How an aftermarket CANBUS car immobiliser works

An aftermarket car immobiliser such as the Nitro Immobiliser adds a second, independent check that does not rely on the key at all. It connects to the car’s data network, the CANBUS, which the factory electronics use to communicate. Because it works through that network, it can stop the engine starting without cutting wires, and without any extra keypad, fob or tag on show.

To start the car, you enter a PIN using buttons the car already has, such as the steering wheel controls or the window switches. Without that sequence, the engine will not run, even if a thief has relayed, cloned or programmed a perfect copy of your key. Because the PIN is unique to you and uses ordinary buttons, a thief has nothing to look for and nothing to bypass.

6 proven reasons to fit a car immobiliser

  1. It defeats keyless relay theft. A relayed key signal is useless without your PIN.
  2. It defeats programmed and cloned keys. A new key still cannot start the car.
  3. It is invisible. There is no keypad, no fob and no flashing light to tell a thief it is there.
  4. It arms itself. Every time you switch off, the car immobiliser re-arms automatically, so you never forget to set it.
  5. It suits modern cars and EVs. Working through the CANBUS means it can be fitted to keyless, hybrid and electric vehicles.
  6. It has no monthly fee. Once fitted, a car immobiliser costs nothing to run.

Living with a car immobiliser

Day to day, a PIN-based car immobiliser takes a couple of seconds. Get in, press your sequence of buttons, start the car and drive. When you switch off and walk away, it arms itself. There is nothing to carry and nothing to charge.

When the car goes in for a service or valet, service mode lets the garage drive it without being told your PIN, so your code stays private. You can change your PIN if you ever need to, and our UK team can help if you forget it.

Car immobiliser and tracker: the strongest combination

A car immobiliser stops the car being driven away. A tracker helps get it back if it is taken another way, such as being lifted onto a recovery truck or a lorry. Together they cover both risks, which is why we offer the Nitro Immobiliser as a package with a choice of trackers:

Each package is fitted in one visit at an address of your choice on the UK mainland, and installation is included in the price.

Other ways to protect against keyless theft

  • Keep keys in a signal-blocking pouch or metal tin, away from doors and windows.
  • Ask your dealer whether the key’s keyless function can be switched off or set to sleep.
  • Use a visible steering lock as a deterrent.
  • Park in a garage or a well-lit, overlooked spot where you can.
  • Fit a car immobiliser and a tracker, so that a car that cannot be started cannot be driven away, and a car that is taken anyway can be found.

The police-backed Secured by Design initiative and Thatcham Research, which tests vehicle security for UK insurers, both publish further advice on vehicle security.

Will a car immobiliser affect my warranty or insurance?

A CANBUS car immobiliser is designed to integrate with the car’s own electronics without cutting into its wiring, and professional installation ensures it does not interfere with the car’s systems. Tell your insurer that one has been fitted: some take aftermarket security into account, and it is always best to keep them informed of changes to the car.

Fitting and support

Every Nitro Immobiliser is fitted by our professional engineers at your home or workplace on the UK mainland. They set up your PIN, show you how to use it and explain service mode before they leave. Afterwards, our UK team is on 01622 234510, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and we offer 24/7 support if your vehicle is immobilised and you need urgent help: call the same number and select option 1. Car immobiliser, steering lock or tracker?

Each layer of vehicle security does a different job, and they work best together:

  • A steering lock is a visible deterrent. It may persuade an opportunist to move on, but it can be cut off with time and tools.
  • A car immobiliser stops the engine starting. A thief who gets past the lock and the doors still cannot drive the car away.
  • A tracker helps you get the car back if it leaves by other means, such as on a trailer or a recovery truck, and gives you peace of mind day to day.

If you can only choose one, think about how cars like yours are usually stolen. For keyless models taken by relay attack, a car immobiliser deals with the method directly. For vehicles more likely to be lifted or towed, a monitored tracker matters most. Our packages let you have both.

How fitting works

When you order, a member of our team calls to confirm your car’s make, model and year and to book a time and place on the UK mainland. Our engineer connects the car immobiliser to the vehicle’s data network, hides it out of sight and sets up your personal PIN using the buttons you choose. They then test it with you, show you how to start the car and how to use service mode, and answer any questions before they leave. If you have chosen a package with a tracker, both are fitted in the same visit, and the tracker is set up in your app.

Is your car a target?

Thieves tend to focus on cars that are easy to take and easy to sell, either whole or as parts. Keyless models, popular SUVs and premium cars parked on drives or streets overnight are frequent targets. Signs that your area is being watched can include people trying car door handles at night, unfamiliar vehicles waiting nearby and neighbours reporting attempted thefts. If you are worried, act early: a car immobiliser takes away the easy option a thief is looking for.

What to look for in a car immobiliser

Not every aftermarket car immobiliser works the same way. When comparing options, check these points:

  • Does it rely on a key fob or tag? A system that needs a separate fob gives thieves something else to steal or copy. A PIN entered on the car’s own buttons does not.
  • Does it arm automatically? If you have to remember to set it, there will be a day you forget.
  • Is it invisible? Keypads and flashing lights tell a thief where to start. The best car immobiliser gives no clue it is there.
  • Does it suit your car? Keyless, hybrid and electric cars need an immobiliser designed to work with their electronics.
  • Who fits it? Professional fitting matters, both for security and to protect the car’s own systems.
  • What support is there afterwards? If you forget your PIN or the car is immobilised, you want a UK team you can call.

A short history of the car immobiliser

Immobilisers became standard on new cars in the late 1990s, and they transformed car security: the old trick of starting a car with a screwdriver all but disappeared. For years, stealing a modern car meant stealing its key. Keyless entry, diagnostic ports and connected electronics have since given thieves new ways in, which is why a second, independent car immobiliser has become so popular again.

Is a car immobiliser worth it?

If your car has keyless entry, is a model popular with thieves, or is parked on the street overnight, an aftermarket car immobiliser is one of the most effective upgrades you can make. It deals with the exact methods criminals use today, costs nothing to run once fitted and makes no difference to how you drive. Add a tracker, and you have covered both prevention and recovery.

Frequently asked questions

What does a car immobiliser do?

It stops the engine starting unless the right key, code or signal is present. An aftermarket PIN immobiliser adds a second check that a cloned or relayed key cannot pass.

My car already has an immobiliser. Do I need another?

Factory immobilisers recognise your key, but thieves now copy, programme or relay keys to fool them. An aftermarket car immobiliser that needs your PIN closes that gap.

Does a car immobiliser work on electric cars?

Yes. The Nitro Immobiliser works through the car’s CANBUS network and is designed for modern vehicles, including hybrids and EVs. We check compatibility with your make and model before fitting.

What happens if I forget my PIN?

Call our UK team on 01622 234510. We will guide you through the next steps, and for an immobilised vehicle our 24/7 line is option 1.

Does a car immobiliser have a monthly fee?

No. The Nitro Immobiliser has no subscription. Only the tracker packages have a monthly plan for tracking or monitoring.

Can I change my car immobiliser PIN?

Yes. Your PIN can be changed after fitting if you ever need to, for example if you think someone has seen you enter it. Call our team and we will explain how.

Can I move my car immobiliser to another car?

Speak to us before you change cars. Whether the immobiliser can be moved depends on the new car’s make and model, and we will advise you on the best option.

Can a garage service my car with a car immobiliser fitted?

Yes. Service mode lets a garage or valeter drive the car without being given your PIN.
